Cinema Politica

Désolé - En anglais seulement

Good afternoon!

I am writing from Cinema Politica to let you know about a week-long political film screening series that we will be holding in June in collaboration with Encuentro 2014. Encuentro is a week-long conference and performance festival which brings together artists and activists from all over the Americas in order to explore the intersection between art and politics through performance, experimentation and collaboration.

Since this year’s festival will be hosted by Concordia University, Cinema Politica was invited to hold a week of evening screenings, beginning on Sunday, June 22 and continuing until Saturday, June 28th. Beginning at 5:00 P.M. every night, we will be screening political films under the thematic umbrella of creativity, colonization and contestation, with an emphasis on Indigenous struggle in Canada and the Americas.

Several of our films directly address Indigenous issues in Canada, and might be of interest to your organization and community.

On Thursday, June 26 we will be presenting TIMETRAVELLER and THE BALLAD OF CROWFOOT, both of which tell stories of aboriginal culture and history in Canada. One through music video, and the other through Machinima video game software.

On Friday, June 27 we will be screening MISSING YOUNG WOMAN and FINDING DAWN, two documentaries that deal with gender violence and racism in Mexico and Canada.

Finally, on Saturday, June 28 we will be showing two political fiction films: RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS and FILE UNDER MISCELLANEOUS - one of which creates a distopic future for Indigenous peoples in Canada, while the other examines their unjust, corrupt and violent past.

All events will be taking place in the J.A. de Sève Cinema (1400 de Maisonneuve W.), with free admission.

For more information, please visit the event’s page on our website: http://www.cinemapolitica.org/encuentro2014

If you could possibly pass along the event information to anyone who you think might be interested, that would be much appreciated - be it through social media or your organization’s listservs!

Thanks so much for your help and we look forward to seeing you there.

Best,

Rachel
